“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.” – Carl Jung

Welcome to the ARTfo website, I am Magda Jakab K., a photographer, social integration expert and trainer, and photo and art therapist.

I combine photography, counseling, and art making to provide people a better quality of life through individual and group sessions. The creative process of art making helps clients tolerate uncomfortable feelings, gain psychological resiliency, have better community interaction. With photography-art therapy you can become the best project of your life.

The path of self-discovery through the arts

As our lives become increasingly hectic, and as more crises emerge on the world stage, mental health issues such as anxiety and a sense of meaninglessness are becoming more prevalent. Art and photography can be an excellent tool to help you decipher your emotions and their underlying causes. These techniques aid you in understanding why you respond to certain situations in specific ways, as well as how these patterns and habits impact your life. Engaging with the arts fosters self-compassion, self-acceptance, and allows you to fully embrace your own uniqueness.

Why did I choose photography?

Perhaps because it has been a refuge for me since my teenage years. It not only defines my work, but is also a significant part of my identity. Photography has accompanied me through all stages of life; it was with me during difficult times, supporting me wherever I went. I’ve combined these personal experiences with the knowledge I’ve gained through training, in order to create the programs I offer to you. Photography is more than just a tool for me; the images have become friends and companions on my journey. They help me explore the depths of life, make me laugh, make me think, and give me strength. This is the catalyst for everything I continue to do.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a tool that allows us to delve deep into the soul, where we can find the inner strength for healing. The process of creation is not just a form of expression, but a journey to the most vulnerable parts of ourselves. Feelings and memories take the form of colors and shapes, conveying them to the world through creation. Art therapy can also signify a new beginning, where our bravest and most authentic self is reborn.

“My sister used to be very stressed and anxious, for understandable reasons. Ever since we started drawing, she sends me a mandala drawing every day. She said she feels like she’s found relaxation therapy in drawing. 🙂 She works for an Austrian family, taking care of an elderly person with Alzheimer’s. Today, they drew together.”

Phototherapy

Photos can be a powerful tool, as they can open doors that are difficult to access through other methods. They can reflect important moments in our lives, for example in self-portraits. By using a variety of visual techniques such as photo projection, image meditation, photo collages, self-portraits, as well as biographical and daily photos, we can gain a deeper understanding of both ourselves and of the world around us. Phototherapy reveals new perspectives, connecting past experiences with present and future goals, while creatively exploring one’s inner world.

“I was fortunate to work with Magda during a very critical period of my life. I reached a point where I questioned everything I believed in, including myself. Perhaps this is what they call a midlife crisis. Besides personal conflicts, I had to face family problems, and my depression reached levels I had never experienced before. The artworks created during therapy helped me explore my emotions, understand the roots of my unresolved emotional conflicts, and allowed me to find a more liberated, balanced version of myself.”

“Magda’s decisiveness and compassion brought positive changes to my life. Her strong intent to help had a truly positive impact on my everyday life.”

Mindful Photography

Mindful photography is a conscious approach that focuses on fully experiencing the moment, being present, and paying attention to inner experiences. It is not about technical perfection, but rather about directing the photographer’s full attention to seeing the beauty in what surrounds them. Mindful photography allows us to slow down, offering an opportunity to create a stronger connection with ourselves. It transforms anxious energy into a peaceful one, and supports the individual in stepping onto a new, more positive path.

“I am deeply grateful for your sensitivity and your ability to enrich me with the most appropriate words. Sometimes I don’t even need to look at you because I know you’ve already noticed what I see and feel. Our work together has been soul-opening.”

Photographic Genogram

The wounds of our ancestors often remain hidden, but nonetheless have a profound impact on us. Healing these wounds is essential for achieving real change in our lives, and this process begins with healing family relationships. We all deserve love, freedom, and emotional balance. If you are struggling with family or generational trauma, it is time to face it. You can choose to break old patterns, and by doing so, release yourself from the chains that hold you

back to build something entirely new. The sociogenogram is a powerful tool in this process. It helps to uncover hidden patterns in family relationships and offers you a deeper understanding of yourself. Sign up now and start your journey of transformation!

“This was an extremely positive experience for me, allowing me to open a few doors that had been closed before.”
“I’ve shed some shackles, it feels good.”
“Magda is a sensitive and receptive guide; with her help, I found a place where I could get closer to myself. I was able to explore my own reality from a different perspective. She provided me with new tools to better understand myself and created a safe, warm environment where I could share and discuss life’s most important questions.”

Self-Portrait Project

In this day and age, almost everyone has taken a selfie before, but far fewer people have experienced creating a self-portrait. A selfie is a spontaneous picture capturing a single moment, while a self-portrait is centered on storytelling and self-expression. It is a deliberate creative process in which you are both the model and the photographer. This affects the dynamic and energy of the photo, which subsequently impacts the final image. Self-portraits are able to capture raw, vulnerable, and authentic moments, offering you a powerful means to tell your story and explore your emotions.

“Your presence and our work together are invaluable to me. You offer me valuable words and ideas… just as you offer your closeness and love. All of this is very important to me.”

Freedom Project

The Freedom Project offers an alternative approach, a unique combination of photography and therapy, to your journey to your inner self and beyond. This five-session online program, including one photography session, provides a profound phototherapy experience. Its focus stretches far beyond solely external beauty, to the inner conflicts that so many women experience in their daily lives. Perhaps you too find yourself questioning your role as a woman and your place in the world, and are seeking a way to align yourself. The Freedom Project helps you to understand these feelings and equips you with the tools necessary to move forward on your personal growth journey.

“At first, I didn’t quite know what to expect from this project, but I felt I needed a deeper change. After the first online session, I already felt I was in the right place. The journey wasn’t easy, but with each session, I got closer to myself. For the first time, I truly felt that it was okay to be who I am.”

Art and Education

Traditional teaching methods tend to focus exclusively on academic growth, while often overlooking the critical aspect of emotional development. This can lead to alienated, stressed, and underperforming students. Incorporating artistic tools into education can significantly reduce anxiety, support students’ emotional and intellectual development, while also enhancing academic performance.

„I met Magda at the MA course in Intercultural Psychology and Pedagogy (now Social Integration Studies) at ELTE PPK. She was a student of mine and from the very first course I was impressed by her endless empathy and creativity. In her thesis she wrote about the importance of arts-based methods in the use of therapeutic techniques with socially disadvantaged groups. She interviewed a number of excellent practitioners and demonstrated a very fresh perspective and comprehensive knowledge in her thesis, from which I myself, as a reviewer, learned a great deal. Later on, she was also involved in the work of the Institute of Intercultural Psychology and Pedagogy at ELTE PPK as a lecturer, and we had the opportunity to develop and implement intercultural trainings together in Hungarian and English, which was a wonderful professional journey together with Magda, and the trainings were a very positive and important experience for our students. Finally, I became a client of Magda, we worked together in a difficult life situation with phototherapy. With great sensitivity and knowledge, she helped me to sort out my troubled period quickly and effectively, for which I feel a deep gratitude to her, along with collegiality and friendly affection.

“For me, the presentation by the girl living in Italy was very practical. I took the method of ‘choosing a tree that represents you’ to the Bartók Conservatory for 9th graders, and it was brutally good. Seriously. This presentation was worth it just for that.”

“You indirectly learn more about your classmate.”

“You allow yourself to be vulnerable.”
